Ball dress

It's not definite yet, but I might be going to the WA psychology students' ball (yes, I'm fully aware that I'm not a psych student!) on 19th September and do not have a dress to wear. I don't want to go and buy an expensive ball dress from the shops that I'll never wear again and my year 12 ball dress, well, that didn't fit me a month after the ball, let alone two and a half years later. My first thought was that I could get Em to make me a dress...my second thought was, "Shit, she's in England" haha. Ahh, I don't know what to do! Jody said I could borrow her dress from her brother's wedding, apparently that's my size so I'll have to try it, but if that doesn't fit...where the hell do I get a really cheap ball dress from?!

So, I decided to try on my year 12 ball dress for the first time in years. I was disgusted by how small the waist is, seriously it made me feel sick, I can't believe I made myself that skinny. But I managed to put it on, it's a bit tight around the hips and bum and unless I pull it straight, it bunches a bit in some areas, but I guess it would be okay for one night. Only problem is, the zip only does up halfway...

Exhibit A: That's as far as the zip does up. See on the left-hand side, there's a light green bit? That's about where the hook at the top of the zip is.



Exhibit B: That's how far I can pull the top of the zip across, there's still a pretty big gap.


My question, as I know absolutely nothing about sewing, is could some sort of fabric or something be added into that gap to make it wearable? Or could a new, shorter zip maybe be put in to make it kind of backless? I have no idea, I'm clutching at straws here!

You are tiny! How on earth were you smaller than you are now?! I have no idea about sewing or anything like that but I think it looks good in the first one, I like backless dresses right now. So if you could somehow make that work it would be cool.

That was what I thought too, Kaihla! It actually looks kind of cool as a backless dress, the only problem is that if you look at it in real life there's a zip, and also it needs to be pulled a tiny bit tighter, otherwise it gapes around the front under my arms/near the boobs.

As for the dress being so small, around the time of the ball I was really upset about stuff and I remember being upset that my best friends had ball dates and I didn't and I was convinced I was ugly and gross, so I purposely lost a lot of weight by not eating much. I even lost enough weight between dress fittings for the dressmaker to have to take it in even more, I think by the time of the ball I was only 47kg. It's gross and I'm so embarassed in hindsight, I hate my ball photos because my head is way too big for my body, in one you can see my hips sticking out and it's fucking disgusting.

You won't be able to make it bigger, it doesn't really work that way. However, if you could cut off the zip and sew it up to look like a backless dress, then you could do that.

Otherwise you can try looking in opp shops, maybe you'll get lucky? Or ask friends that are about your size if they have something you could borrow.

Hey Alex, I have my year 12 ball dress that I want to sell for about $100. It was $300 new and only worn once.

Its purple and would probably fit you as I was tiny in year 12!!

I'd say you could borrow either one of my formal dresses but they'd hang off you.

Thanks Ness. I'll definitely consider it, although I'm trying to spend as little as possible as the ticket is already $110 and I'm supposed to be saving for Melbourne! Assuming I go, I'm going to do my hair and make-up myself to save money, too. But I'll definitely keep it in mind

Ok balls, you don't need some floor length gown and a dress from a formal dress store, seriously a nice knee length dress does the trick, as long as the dress isn't ridiculously short you can get away anything really

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Doesn't your ball have a theme? All of our balls have a theme and people rarely wear full length dresses. Knee length would be fine I would have thought?

I'm not sure about a theme to be honest. I'm not even sure if I'm going still, the only reason I'm considering it is because the tickets are selling really slowly so I'll probably be able to buy one right up until the day before! All I know is that Kirstie and all her psych friends are going to wear their year 12 ball dresses.

NESS! I've just been given a free ticket to the ball so I may have to take you up on the offer of the dress if it's still valid! Oh god, now I'm panicking about how soon you're going to Phuket.
