Question for those of you who have tattoos: How did you find/choose someone to do your tatt?

Word of mouth. Although it's pretty easy in Canberra because there's only 5 shops.

Same for me, word of mouth. I went to Illicit Studios in Auckland for my first because I loved Illicit & Misery as a teen, and always had this idea in my head that I'd get my first tatt there. So I did. It was really expensive though; from memory I think I paid $110 for that tiny heart on my foot (Sian? Did I get that right?) which I guess is what you get when you go to (arguably) the most well-known tattoo studio in the country.

For my quote I went to Luke at Art'N'Soul up here at home; we only have three or four studios in Whangarei, so it wasn't hard to choose. Luke did Kelsey's kite tattoo and my friend Shannon's chest piece, and both came out beautifully. He's got a nice steady touch and really clean line work, which was obviously important for my quote. For anything bigger, like a sleeve or back piece, I'll go to Renee. She does incredible shading and colour work, and the stuff she designs is really cool. Luke's designs are a little too gangster/mainstream for my liking.

Paul and I have wanted for a long time to get tattoos that are meaningful to each other, and last week I had the idea of getting the date we got together inked in Roman numerals. Obviously the idea is still a little fresh for me to dash out and do it (you know how long I like to deliberate over ink, hello seven years to get 'that which knitteth souls') but I really, really like it. I want it inked quite small in fine print on the outer edge of my right forearm, under my wrist, and Paul wants his bold and large on his foot.

I agree, there are plenty of ways to show your love that wont be a painful reminder if god forbid you do break up.

I get where you're coming from, but we won't be breaking up. I'm not concerned about that.

Tash, most people in happy relationships aren't concerned that they will break up. If they did, they probably shouldn't be in the relationship anymore as it is. But it's still a possibility. Shit happens, you don't want a tattoo to remind you of when it does.

Haha, okay. I find it quite funny y'all think I am all of a sudden completely naive? I know how relationships can go, and I know how this one won't go. I wouldn't expect anyone to understand, because it's the kind of thing I would've thought of as batshit crazy before feeling it.

Gotta be honest, I really really want to get Matt's initials on my ring finger, because I hate wearing my wedding ring (because I hate wearing rings, not because I don't want to wear my wedding ring) but I would probably never do it. I don't ever think we will break up, I wouldn't have married him if I thought we would, but I still am extremely hesitant to tattoo anything.

See, I think people make super permanent commitments to each other all the time, and all too flippantly. Personally I would find dealing with a failed marriage far harder than having a tattoo that reminded me of a time I was blissfully happy, yet if I announced Paul and I were engaged everyone would probably just be saying, "Omg congrats!" Not, ooo, I wouldn't suggest that, what if it all goes wrong?

It cracks me up that people go nuts over some lifetime commitments, but abhor others.

I guess it just seems different because you can look in the mirror and not see your divorce.
